Concrete Countertop Quality
by Dave McVey
Concrete countertops should be flat and smooth with very little variation in thickness over the entire length of the countertop. Guidelines produced by the Concrete Countertop Institute suggest that "Nominal thickness should vary by no more than 1/16” over a 4’ length of countertop and by no more that 1/32" across a seam".
Countertop edges should be straight and consistant along the length of the countertop and should match at the seams. All exposed corners should be consistant with matching profiles.
Countertop seems should not vary in thickenss and should be tight to each other. The Concrete Countertop Insititute recommends that seems should not exceed 1/8" in width and surfaces of adjacent slabs should be even and flush to each other.
Countertop surfaces should be free of cracks, pinholes and tool marks. Note: concrete is poruous and microscopic or very tiny pinholes are permitted. Surfaces should be consistant in color and appearance.
Surfaces must be sealed with a quality masonry sealer and should resist staining from Vinegar, Lemon juice, Mustard, Coffee, Red wine, Vegetable oil, Water, Ammonia, Bleach, Isopropyl alcohol (70%), Acetone and Dish soap.
